Description
The Volcano Roll is a popular sushi dish known for its unique combination of flavors and textures, featuring a base of sushi rice wrapped in nori, filled with imitation crab meat, avocado, and spicy mayo, topped with a creamy mixture of crab and spicy mayo that is broiled for a warm finish.
Ingredients
- Sushi rice: 2 cups of uncooked sushi rice
- Nori sheets: 4 sheets of nori
- Imitation crab meat: 200 grams of shredded imitation crab meat
- Avocado: 1 ripe avocado, sliced
- Spicy mayo: 1/4 cup of spicy mayo
- Eel sauce: 1/4 cup of eel sauce
- Scallions: 2 finely chopped scallions
- Rice vinegar: 3 tablespoons of rice vinegar
- Sugar: 1 tablespoon of sugar
- Salt: 1 teaspoon of salt
- Sesame seeds: Optional for garnish
Instructions
- Rinse 2 cups of sushi rice under cold water until the water runs clear, then cook according to package instructions and transfer to a bowl to cool.
- In a separate bowl, combine 200 grams of shredded imitation crab meat with 1/4 cup of spicy mayo and mix well.
- Place a bamboo sushi mat on a flat surface, lay a sheet of nori shiny side down, and spread a handful of sushi rice evenly over the nori, leaving 1 inch at the top edge.
- On the lower third of the rice-covered nori, place a line of the imitation crab mixture, followed by avocado slices and chopped scallions.
- In a small bowl, mix any remaining imitation crab with additional spicy mayo for the topping.
- Preheat the oven’s broiler, slice the roll into 6-8 pieces, place on a baking sheet, and spoon the crab and spicy mayo mixture over each piece. Broil for 2-3 minutes until slightly browned and bubbly.
- Remove from the oven, drizzle eel sauce over the top, sprinkle sesame seeds if desired, and serve immediately with extra spicy mayo and soy sauce on the side.
Notes
- Rinse the rice until the water is clear to avoid overly sticky rice.
- Follow package instructions carefully to avoid overcooking the rice.
- Use a moderate amount of filling to make rolling easier.
- Seal the edge of the nori with a little water to prevent the roll from falling apart.
