Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease an 8-inch square baking pan and line the bottom with parchment paper.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, and salt.
- In a large bowl, cream softened butter and brown sugar until fluffy (3-5 minutes). Add maple syrup, egg, and vanilla extract; beat until combined.
- Alternately add flour mixture and buttermilk to wet ingredients, starting and ending with flour. Stir until just combined. Then stir in hot water until batter is smooth.
- Pour batter into prepared pan and bake 35-40 minutes. Check doneness with a toothpick. Cool completely in pan.
- For spiced cream: whip heavy cream, powdered sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla extract until soft peaks form. Avoid overwhipping.
- Slice cooled cake and serve with a generous dollop of spiced cream. Optionally, garnish with cinnamon or maple syrup drizzle.
