Description
Fried green tomatoes are a delightful Southern dish made from unripe, firm green tomatoes that are sliced, breaded, and fried until golden brown, offering a unique tangy flavor and crispy texture.
Ingredients
- Firm green tomatoes: 4 medium-sized
- Cornmeal: 1 cup
- All-purpose flour: 1/2 cup
- Buttermilk: 1 cup
- Salt: 1 teaspoon
- Black pepper: 1/2 teaspoon
- Oil for frying: Enough to fill a skillet to about 1/2 inch deep (approximately 1 cup)
Instructions
- Select firm, unripe green tomatoes that are bright and smooth.
- Prepare the breading mixture by combining cornmeal, all-purpose flour, salt, and black pepper in a bowl.
- Slice the tomatoes into 1/4-inch thick rounds.
- Coat each tomato slice in buttermilk, then in the cornmeal mixture, pressing gently to ensure the coating sticks.
- Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat and fry the breaded tomato slices in batches for 3-4 minutes on each side until golden brown.
- Serve warm with a dipping sauce of your choice.
Notes
- For a spicy variation, add cayenne pepper to the cornmeal mixture.
- For a healthier option, bake the coated tomatoes at 425°F (220°C) for 20-25 minutes instead of frying.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.
