Description
French Apple Tart, or Tarte aux Pommes, is a classic French dessert with a flaky crust, tender apples, and a delightful glaze.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- ½ cup unsalted butter, chilled and diced
- ¼ cup sugar
- 1 egg yolk
- 2 to 4 tablespoons cold water
- 4 medium apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced (such as Granny Smith or Fuji)
- 2 tablespoons sugar (for the apples)
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon (optional)
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- ½ cup apricot jam (for glazing)
Instructions
- Make the tart crust by combining flour, sugar, and cold butter. Add egg yolk and cold water, mixing until dough forms. Chill for 30 minutes.
- Prepare the apples by peeling, coring, and slicing them thinly. Toss with lemon juice, sugar, and cinnamon, and let sit for 15 minutes.
- Roll out the chilled dough and fit it into a tart pan. Chill again before pricking the bottom and baking at 375°F (190°C) for 15-20 minutes.
- Assemble the tart by layering the apple slices on the crust in a circular pattern. Bake for 35-40 minutes until golden. Glaze with warm apricot jam.
Notes
- Use chilled butter and cold water for a flaky crust.
- Slice apples thinly to ensure even baking.
- Experiment with different apple varieties for varied flavor.
