Description

French Apple Cake is a moist, buttery dessert combining tender apples with vanilla, rum, and warm spices. Simple to make, it’s perfect served warm or at room temperature.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 large apples (Granny Smith or Golden Delicious), peeled, cored, and chopped
  • 1 1/4 cups (160g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 3 large eggs
  • 3/4 cup (150g) granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup (120ml) whole milk
  • 2 tbsp dark rum
  • 100g unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled
  • Powdered sugar for dusting (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch (23cm) springform or round cake pan.
  2. Whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt in a medium bowl; set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, beat eggs and sugar until pale and thickened, about 3-4 minutes.
  4. Add vanilla extract, milk, and dark rum to the egg mixture and whisk until combined.
  5. Gradually fold in the dry ingredients using a spatula until just incorporated.
  6. Stir in melted butter until smooth, then gently fold in the chopped apples evenly.
  7. Pour batter into prepared pan and smooth the top.
  8. Bake for 45-50 minutes until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean and the top is golden brown.
  9. Cool in the pan for 10-15 minutes, then remove from pan and cool completely on a wire rack.
  10. Optionally dust with powdered sugar before serving.

Notes

  • Use firm, tart apples like Granny Smith for best texture and flavor.
  • Do not overmix the batter to avoid a dense cake.
  • Peeling apples too thinly can cause them to dissolve during baking.
  • Ensure baking powder is fresh for proper rise.
  • Optional: add cinnamon or nutmeg to the batter for extra warmth.
