Description

Egyptian beef goulash is a hearty and flavorful dish that showcases the rich culinary traditions of Egypt, featuring tender beef simmered with vegetables and aromatic spices.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 kg (2.2 lbs) beef chuck: Cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 large onions: Finely chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic: Minced
  • 4 medium tomatoes: Chopped
  • 2 bell peppers: Diced (red or green)
  • 2 teaspoons ground cumin
  • 2 teaspoons ground coriander
  • 2 teaspoons paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Salt and pepper: To taste
  • 500 ml (2 cups) beef broth or water
  • Fresh herbs: Such as parsley or cilantro for garnish

Instructions

  1. Prepare all ingredients by chopping onions, garlic, tomatoes, and bell peppers, and cutting the beef into 1-inch cubes.
  2. In a large pot, heat olive oil over medium-high heat and brown the beef cubes in batches for 5-7 minutes.
  3. Remove the beef and sauté the chopped onions in the same pot until translucent, about 5 minutes, then add minced garlic and cook for an additional minute.
  4. Add chopped tomatoes and diced bell peppers, cooking for about 5 minutes until softened, then stir in spices and toast for 1-2 minutes.
  5. Return the beef to the pot, add broth or water, season with salt and pepper, bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 1.5 to 2 hours.
  6. Adjust seasoning, thicken sauce if necessary, and serve hot garnished with fresh herbs.

Notes

  • Choose beef chuck for tenderness; avoid lean cuts.
  • Experiment with spices for personal taste.
  • Longer simmering results in more tender beef.
