Description
Dutch Apple Pie, or ‘Appeltaart,’ is a traditional dessert with tender apples, warm spices, and a crumbly streusel topping that’s irresistible.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 9-inch unbaked pie crust
- 5 large Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
- 1/2 cup white sugar
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice
- 1/2 cup white sugar (for the crumble)
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour (for the crumble)
- 1/2 cup cold butter, cubed (for the crumble)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Press the unbaked pie crust into a 9-inch pie pan, crimping the edges as desired.
- In a large mixing bowl, toss the sliced apples with 1/2 cup sugar, 2 tablespoons flour, cinnamon, and lemon juice. Fill the prepared crust with the apple mixture.
- For the crumble topping, combine 1/2 cup sugar and 1/2 cup flour. Cut in the cold butter until the mixture forms coarse crumbs. Sprinkle the crumble over the apples.
- Bake the pie for 1 hour, until the top is golden brown and the apples are tender.
- Cool the pie on a wire rack. Serve warm or at room temperature, optionally with whipped cream or ice cream.
Notes
- Use a mix of apple varieties for a more complex flavor profile.
- Ensure the butter is cold for a crumbly streusel topping.
- Let the pie cool completely before serving to allow the filling to set.
