Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Mix well.
- Add eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract. Beat with an electric mixer on medium speed for about 2 minutes.
- Carefully add boiling water to the batter and mix until combined.
- Pour the batter evenly into the prepared cake pans and bake for 30 to 35 minutes.
- Check for doneness with a toothpick. Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
- For the frosting, beat unsalted butter until creamy, then gradually add powdered sugar, heavy cream, and vanilla extract. Beat until light and fluffy.
- Level the tops of the cooled cakes, frost the top of one layer, and place the second layer on top. Frost the entire cake and create a textured surface.
- Decorate with edible grave markers, dust with cocoa powder, and sprinkle chocolate crumbs around the base.
