Description
Creamed spinach is a classic dish that combines fresh spinach with a rich, creamy sauce, known for its smooth texture and savory flavor.
Ingredients
- Fresh spinach: 1 lb (about 450 grams), washed and chopped
- Heavy cream: 1 cup (240 ml)
- Garlic: 2 cloves, minced
- Butter: 2 tablespoons (30 grams)
- Onion: 1 small, finely chopped
- Nutmeg: 1/4 teaspoon, freshly grated
- Salt: to taste
- Pepper: to taste
Instructions
- Bring a large pot of water to a boil and blanch the washed and chopped spinach for about 2 minutes until it wilts. Drain and rinse under cold water, then squeeze out excess water.
- In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat, add the finely chopped onion, and sauté for 3-4 minutes until translucent. Add minced garlic and cook for an additional minute.
- Pour in the heavy cream and bring to a gentle simmer, stirring occasionally for about 5 minutes to reduce slightly.
- Add the blanched spinach to the skillet and stir well to coat with the creamy sauce. Sprinkle in freshly grated nutmeg, season with salt and pepper, and cook for another 2-3 minutes.
- Transfer the creamed spinach to a serving dish and garnish with additional nutmeg if desired. Serve warm.
Notes
- Fresh spinach is recommended for the best flavor and texture.
- Adjust the creaminess by adding more heavy cream or using half-and-half.
- Consider adding cheese for extra flavor, such as Parmesan or cream cheese.
- For a vegan version, substitute heavy cream with coconut milk or cashew cream and use olive oil instead of butter.
