Description
A warm and comforting dessert that combines the tartness of fresh apples with the sweetness of caramel, topped with a crispy oat mixture.
Ingredients
Scale
- 6 medium apples (such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and sliced
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup brown sugar, packed
- 1 cup rolled oats
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup caramel sauce (store-bought or homemade)
- Vanilla ice cream (for serving, optional)
Instructions
- Prepare the apples by peeling, coring, and slicing them. Combine with lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, granulated sugar, and brown sugar in a bowl.
- If making homemade caramel sauce, combine granulated sugar and water in a saucepan, heat until golden brown, then add heavy cream and stir until smooth.
- In a separate bowl, mix rolled oats, all-purpose flour, melted butter, optional nuts, and salt to create the crisp topping.
- Spread the apple mixture in a baking dish and evenly sprinkle the oat topping over it.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake for 30-35 minutes until the topping is golden brown and the apples are bubbly. Drizzle with caramel sauce before serving.
Notes
- For a gluten-free version, substitute all-purpose flour with gluten-free flour and ensure oats are certified gluten-free.
- For a vegan version, use coconut oil instead of butter and make a vegan caramel sauce with coconut cream and brown sugar.
- Mixing different apple varieties can enhance flavor.
