- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/3 cup all-purpose flour
- 3 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- A pinch of nutmeg (optional)
- Lemon zest or orange zest (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Prepare your pie crust by either rolling out a homemade crust or placing a store-bought crust in the pie plate. Prick the bottom of the crust with a fork.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, sugar, flour, eggs, melted butter, vanilla, and salt until smooth. Optionally, add a pinch of nutmeg or zest for extra flavor.
- Pour the filling into the prepared pie crust, being careful not to overfill. Spread it evenly.
- Bake for 50-60 minutes, or until the filling is set and the top is golden brown. The pie is done when a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Allow to cool on a wire rack.
Notes
- If the pie crust is browning too quickly, cover the edges with aluminum foil until the filling sets.
- For a creamier texture, let the buttermilk sit at room temperature before mixing.
