Description

A spooky and delicious treat perfect for Halloween, these Bloody Eyeball Donuts are filled with red jam and topped with candy eyeballs.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup red jam (such as raspberry or strawberry)
  • Powdered sugar (for dusting)
  • Candy eyeballs (for decoration)
  • Vegetable oil (for frying)

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, salt, ground cinnamon, and nutmeg. Whisk until well mixed.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together the whole milk, eggs, melted butter, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  3. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir gently until just combined.
  4. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate the dough for about 30 minutes.
  5. Roll out the chilled dough to about 1/2 inch thick and cut out donut shapes.
  6. Heat vegetable oil in a deep pot to 350°F (175°C) and fry the donuts for 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown.
  7. Remove the donuts from the oil and let them drain on paper towels.
  8. Fill each donut with red jam using a piping bag or small knife, allowing the jam to ooze out slightly.
  9. Dust the filled donuts with powdered sugar and place a candy eyeball on top of each.
  10. Serve on a dark plate for a dramatic presentation.

Notes

  • Be careful not to overmix the dough to avoid tough donuts.
  • Ensure the oil temperature is correct for frying.
  • Chill the dough to help maintain shape while frying.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for 1-2 days or freeze for up to a month.
