- 6 cups day-old bread, cubed (such as French or brioche)
- 2 Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and diced
- 1/2 cup bourbon
- 2 cups heavy cream
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 4 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter (for greasing the baking dish)
Instructions
- Cut the day-old bread into cubes and place in a large mixing bowl.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together heavy cream, bourbon, sugar, eggs, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, and salt until smooth.
- Add diced apples to the bowl with the cubed bread and toss gently.
- Pour the custard mixture over the bread and apples, stirring gently to combine. Let sit for 15-20 minutes.
- Pour the mixture into a greased 9×13-inch baking dish and spread evenly.
- Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 45-55 minutes until golden brown and set.
- Let cool for 10-15 minutes before serving.
Notes
- Use day-old bread for best results.
- Feel free to add nuts or experiment with different apple varieties.
- Can be made ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator before baking.
